Been hearing a lot about basic strategy charts and how they can supposedly give you an edge in blackjack. I've been looking at some of the best online blackjack UK sites like Bet365 and LeoVegas, but I'm sceptical about whether this actually works in practice.

I know is online gambling legal in UK and all that, so no worries there. But can anyone who's actually tried this long-term share their experiences? I'm talking proper bankroll management, following the charts religiously, not just a few lucky sessions.

Basic strategy doesn't give you an edge mate, it just reduces the house edge to around 0.5%. You're still fighting an uphill battle. That said, I've had decent runs on Evolution Gaming tables at 888 Casino using perfect basic strategy.

@betting_pro The maths is solid but variance will kill you. I tracked 50,000 hands using basic strategy across William Hill and Casumo. Lost £340 overall but had some incredible swings both ways.

Here's the thing about expected value in blackjack:

EV = (Probability of Win × Amount Won) - (Probability of Loss × Amount Lost)

With perfect basic strategy: EV = -0.005 × Bet Amount

So for every £10 bet, your expected loss is 5p. Over thousands of hands, this adds up. The house always wins in the long run, but basic strategy minimises your losses compared to playing by gut feeling.

@livedealer_fan That's exactly what I was afraid of. So we're basically just losing slower? What about the best blackjack sites uk - do any of them offer better odds or is it pretty standard across the board?

I've been tracking my results for 6 months now. Started with £1000 bankroll, strict £5-£25 betting using basic strategy only. Currently down £180. The psychological toll is harder than the financial loss tbh.

@betting_pro Most UK sites use standard rules. Here's what I've found:

Casino Decks Dealer Stands Double After Split Surrender House Edge
                  Bet365 8 Soft 17 Yes No 0.66%
                  LeoVegas 6 Soft 17 Yes No 0.64%
                  888 Casino 8 All 17s Yes No 0.56%
                  Casumo 6 Soft 17 Yes Yes 0.48%

Casumo's surrender option makes a difference if you use it correctly.

You're all missing the point. Basic strategy isn't about beating the casino - it's about maximising your entertainment value per pound spent. Would you rather lose £100 in 2 hours playing badly or lose £50 in 4 hours playing optimally?

@mike_bet Philosophy aside, I'd rather not lose at all! But seriously, basic strategy has helped me break even more often. Had a £450 withdrawal from Mr Green last month after a 6-hour session using perfect strategy.

The irony here is that everyone's talking about basic strategy like it's some secret weapon, when the casinos literally sell strategy cards in their gift shops. They're not worried about basic strategy players because they know the maths.

@roulette_rob Exactly! The real money in blackjack was always in card counting, but good luck trying that online. The continuous shuffle machines and RNG make it impossible.

Here's the Kelly Criterion for optimal bet sizing:
                          f* = (bp - q) / b

                          Where:
f* = fraction of bankroll to bet
                          b = odds received (1:1 for blackjack)
p = probability of winning (~0.49 with basic strategy)
                          q = probability of losing (~0.51)

                          Result: f* = (1×0.49 - 0.51) / 1 = -0.02

Negative result means don't bet at all! The maths doesn't lie.

This is getting depressing. What about using basic strategy combined with casino bonuses? I've managed to clear wagering requirements on Paddy Power blackjack bonus using perfect strategy.

@bonushunter1 Most bonuses contribute 10% or less towards wagering on blackjack. You'd need a massive bonus to overcome the house edge. PlayOJO's no-wagering bonuses are better for blackjack players.

Been following this thread with interest. I think the real question isn't whether you can beat blackjack, but whether basic strategy makes you a better gambler overall. The discipline required carries over to other games.

As someone new to this, should I even bother learning basic strategy if I'm just playing for fun with small stakes? Seems like a lot of effort for minimal difference.

@newbie_casino Learn it. Takes maybe 2 hours to memorise the chart properly. Even if you're betting £2 a hand, why would you want to give the casino more of your money than necessary?

Update on my tracking: 3 months of perfect basic strategy play across multiple UKGC sites. £2000 total wagered, down £127. Variance is brutal - had a £300 losing streak followed by a £250 winning streak. The house edge is real but beatable short-term with luck.

@casino_dan Thanks for the real-world data. I think I'm convinced that basic strategy is worth learning even if it can't beat the game long-term. Started practising on Virgin Games' free play tables.

Final thought on this: blackjack with basic strategy is still gambling, not investing. But it's gambling with the lowest possible house edge. Sometimes that's the best we can ask for.

For perfect basic strategy, the probability of busting when hitting depends on your hand total:

                                          P(bust) = Σ(cards that cause bust) / (cards remaining)

                                          For a hard 16 against dealer 10:
                                          P(bust) = 5/13 ≈ 38.46%
Expected value of hitting = -0.5398
Expected value of standing = -0.5419

Hit by 0.0021 - tiny margins matter over thousands of hands!
