Do scratch cards expire in the UK? Found an old one under the sofa
-
Cleaning out the living room today and found a £5 scratch card wedged right under the sofa cushions. No idea how long it's been there - could be months! Before I get my hopes up and scratch it, do scratch cards expire in the UK? Don't want to waste my time if it's just going to be worthless paper at this point.
Anyone know the official rules on this? Cheers!
-
They do expire mate! Usually 180 days from the end of the game, so depends which scratch card game it was from. Check the back of the card - should have an expiry date printed on it somewhere.
-
@james_uk Even if it's expired, scratch it anyway for the fun of it! Just don't get your hopes up if it's a winner. I once found a £100 winner that was 2 weeks past expiry - gutting doesn't even cover it.
-
The mathematics behind scratch card expiry is actually quite fascinating. If we consider the probability distribution: P(winner) = w/n where w = winning cards, n = total cards, then the expected value after expiry becomes E(x) = Σ(prize_value × probability) × 0 = 0, regardless of the original RTP. Essentially, time transforms any positive expected value to absolute zero - the house edge becomes 100%.
But yeah, check the back for dates first!
-
@casino_dan That's probably more maths than most people want to hear about scratch cards!

@james_uk Seriously though, what game is it? Some of the best scratch cards uk wise are the crossword ones - they tend to have better odds. The £5 ones usually have decent RTPs around 60-70%.
-
I work in a corner shop and see this all the time. People come in with ancient scratch cards expecting to claim prizes. The 180-day rule is strict - no exceptions. We've had people argue, cry, even threaten to call the police. Doesn't change anything though.
-
This is why I always scratch mine immediately. What's the point in buying them if you're not going to check? It's like buying a lottery ticket and forgetting to check the results for months.
-
Update: Found the expiry date - expired 3 weeks ago!

Going to scratch it anyway just to see what could have been. This is like gambling torture.
-
@james_uk The suspense is killing me! What was under there?
By the way, how old to buy scratch cards uk is 18, but I swear I remember buying them at 16 years ago. Did the rules change or am I misremembering?
-
@ukgambler99 It's always been 18 for scratch cards, same as all gambling. You might be thinking of something else?
Also @james_uk stop keeping us in suspense! Was it a winner or not?

Here's a comparison of scratch card expiry rules:
Country Expiry Period Grace Period Refund Policy UK 180 days None No refunds Ireland 90 days 30 days Partial Germany 365 days 90 days Full France 60 days None No refunds We actually have it pretty good in the UK compared to France!
-
@james_uk This thread is more dramatic than EastEnders. Just tell us if it was a winner already!
-
Alright, alright! Scratched it this morning...
£250 WINNER! 🤬🤬🤬
I've never been so happy and absolutely livid at the same time. Two hundred and fifty bloody pounds just gone because I'm a slob who loses things down the sofa. My wife is never going to let me live this down.
-
@james_uk OUCH! That's genuinely painful. £250 would have been a nice little windfall. Time to implement a strict 'scratch immediately' policy I think!
-
This is exactly why I stick to online casinos. At Bet365 or William Hill, your winnings don't just disappear because you forgot about them for a few months. Sure, accounts go dormant, but they don't steal your money.
@james_uk I feel your pain mate, but this is a £250 lesson you'll never forget!
-
@withdrawal_king Actually, dormant account policies can be pretty harsh too. Most UKGC casinos will start charging fees after 12-18 months of inactivity.
@james_uk Have you tried contacting Camelot anyway? Sometimes they make exceptions for sob stories... probably not, but worth a shot?
-
The philosophical question here is: if you never knew it was a winner until after it expired, did you ever really lose £250? It's like Schrödinger's scratch card - simultaneously worthless and valuable until observed.
@james_uk In all seriousness though, that's rough mate.
-
@slots_steve That's some next-level mental gymnastics there!

I once lost a £50 winner to expiry. Found it in my car's glove box 8 months later. Not as bad as @james_uk but still stung. Now I photograph all my scratch cards with timestamps - bit obsessive but it works!
-
This thread has convinced me to clean out my car properly. God knows what expired lottery tickets are hiding in there. The real question is: do we learn from these mistakes or are we doomed to repeat them?
@james_uk Thanks for sharing the pain - misery loves company!
-
@mobile_gambler Human nature suggests we'll all do this again eventually. It's like those studies showing people repeatedly make the same financial mistakes despite knowing better. We're wired to be optimistic about our future organization skills.
Still, £250... ooof.
